Anesthesiology and Pain Management
Overview
The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at Wuxi No.2 People’s Hospital (Jiangnan University Medical Center) is a national-level standardized residency training base, a key clinical medical specialty of Jiangsu Province, a Wuxi Medical Innovation Team, and the chairman unit of the Anesthesiology Committee of Wuxi Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine as well as the Painology Committee of Wuxi Medical Association.
The central operating rooms in the North and South campuses consist of 31 full laminar flow operating rooms (including 2 positive-negative pressure convertible operating rooms and 1 hybrid operating room) and 18 PACU beds. The department is equipped with advanced equipment including anesthesia workstations, high-end anesthesia machines, multi-function monitors, heart-lung machines, anesthesia depth monitors, invasive ventilators, and multi-parameter blood gas analyzers. It independently provides anesthesia and cardiopulmonary bypass support for robotic surgeries and cardiac macrovascular surgeries.
The department runs pain specialist and disease-specific clinics, supported by non-invasive treatment rooms, minimally invasive treatment rooms, and specialized wards. It is equipped with portable color ultrasound machines, shockwave therapy devices, medical ozone therapy devices, and radiofrequency pain management systems. It routinely performs stellate ganglion block, pulsed radiofrequency, neurostimulation system implantation, intrathecal drug infusion system implantation, and other minimally invasive procedures.
The department has 49 physicians, including 2 master’s supervisors, 2 associate professors, 2 adjunct professors, and 3 adjunct lecturers. There are 20 associate chief physicians and above, accounting for 41%. Among them, 3 hold doctoral degrees and 35 hold master’s degrees, with postgraduate degree holders accounting for 78%.
Treatment Scope
The department covers three major fields: clinical anesthesia, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain, and critical care monitoring and treatment. It provides anesthesia for surgeries and procedures in Urology, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Orthopedics, Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Stomatology, and Plastic Surgery.
It is responsible for sedation, analgesia, and anesthesia for out-of-operating-room procedures including gastrointestinal endoscopy, flexible bronchoscopy, DSA (neurosurgery, cardiovascular embolization, thrombectomy, radiofrequency), labor analgesia, and family planning procedures. It also participates in hospital-wide emergency resuscitation.
As one of the earliest institutions in Jiangsu Province to establish pain clinics, the department provides standardized diagnosis and treatment for chronic pain, and has formed a complete treatment system for herpes zoster neuralgia, spinal pain, cancer pain, and other acute and chronic pain conditions.
