Clinical Laboratory
Overview
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine of Wuxi No.2 People’s Hospital(Jiangnan University Medical Center) is a comprehensive medical laboratory that integrates clinical testing, teaching, and research. Together with the Blood Transfusion Department, it forms the Laboratory Center. In 2010, the Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine was designated as a Key Clinical Specialty in Jiangsu Province, and in 2023, it achieved ISO 15189 accreditation for medical laboratory quality management systems. The department consistently adheres to the quality policy of “Scientific Work, Accuracy and Quality, and Continuous Improvement,” providing high-quality laboratory services to clinical departments.
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine serves as a national-level standardized training base for clinical laboratory physicians, a master’s and doctoral training center for Jiangnan University, and an internship site for medical laboratory science programs at universities such as Xuzhou Medical University. It also oversees undergraduate teaching for Jiangnan University. The department boasts a professional team of 83 technical staff, including 14 senior-level professionals and 9 associate senior-level professionals; 1 doctoral advisor, 3 master’s advisors, and 7 PhD holders, with master’s and doctoral degree holders accounting for 33% of the total staff.
Technical advantages
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine is divided into three divisions: South Campus Division I, South Campus Division II, and North Campus Division. With a total laboratory area of nearly 5,000 square meters, the department comprises eight specialized units: Biochemistry, Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology and Bone Marrow, Microbiology, Virology, Molecular Biology, and Emergency Medicine. In collaboration with the Transfusion Medicine Department, it provides over 500 types of laboratory tests to support clinical care, processing more than 30 million test requests annually. The department is equipped with a range of state-of-the-art instruments and equipment, including the Beckman biochemical and immunological automated testing system (Beckman AU5800 Biochemical Analyzer, Beckman DXI800 chemiluminescence analyzer), the Roche cobas E602 electrochemiluminescence analyzer, the Mindray hematology analyzer system, the Beckman FC500 fully automated flow cytometer, the Bio-RAD CFX96 Deep Well real-time quantitative PCR system, the Autolumo A2000 Plus fully automated chemiluminescence analyzer, Merieux VITEK2 COMPACT Bacterial Identification and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing System, BD Fully Automated Blood Culture System, Merieux Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), etc.
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine possesses advanced quality management capabilities. It has repeatedly received the Excellence Award from the Provincial Clinical Laboratory Center for interlaboratory quality assessment, and its clinical routine chemistry and hematology analysis programs have been designated as reference laboratories by the Provincial Clinical Laboratory Center. The department is responsible for evaluating clinical laboratory quality control in Wuxi City, providing technical consultation and promoting the adoption of new technologies and testing methods. Guided by clinical needs, the department focuses on the following research areas: 1. Immunoregulation in respiratory diseases; 2. Screening and clinical application of laboratory diagnostic biomarkers for autoimmune diseases; and 3. Molecular epidemiology of bacterial resistance and virulence. Through these initiatives, the department advances scientific research, fosters multidisciplinary collaboration, and enhances clinical services.
Research achievements
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine adheres to a clinical problem-oriented approach guided by basic research, integrating scientific research with clinical practice. It has secured seven grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and more than 10 provincial and municipal-level research projects; published over 50 SCI-indexed papers in top-tier journals such as J Clin Invest and Cancer Letters; and obtained three national invention patents and eight utility model patents; It has received one Third Prize in the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Awards, two Third Prizes in the Jiangsu Medical Science and Technology Awards, and two Wuxi Municipal Science and Technology Progress Awards, as well as two First Prizes and four Second Prizes in the Jiangsu Provincial New Technology Introduction Awards.
The department places great emphasis on enhancing its academic influence and outreach. It organizes provincial and municipal continuing education workshops annually and accepts trainees from primary-care hospitals each year. The department also prioritizes talent development: during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, one staff member was selected for the third tier of Jiangsu Province’s “333 Talent Project,” one was named a Wuxi “Double Hundred” Top Talent, and two were designated as reserve top talents.
