Critical Care Medicine
Overview
The Department of Critical Care Medicine of Wuxi No.2 People’s Hospital(Jiangnan University Medical Center) was established in 1995 and is the oldest critical care medicine department in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. After three decades of relentless effort and development, it has become a provincial-level key clinical specialty in Jiangsu Province that integrates clinical care, teaching, and research. It is also a national-level standardized residency training base, one of the first provincial-level critical care centers for pregnant women in Jiangsu Province, a provincial-level “Youth Civilization Unit,” and a provincial-level “Workers' Vanguard Unit.” The department is equipped with a wide range of advanced monitoring and treatment devices, including hemodynamic monitors (PICCO), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) systems. The department operates across two campuses—North and South—with a total of 38 beds. It employs 106 medical staff members, including 23 with master’s degrees or higher, 9 with senior professional titles or above, 1 returnee from overseas studies, 1 Jiangsu Province “333 High-Level Talent,” 1 Jiangsu Province “Six Major Peaks Talent,” 1 key medical talent under Wuxi City’s “Science, Education, and Health Strengthening Project,” and 1 young reserve talent under Wuxi City’s “Medical Double Hundred Talent” program.
Treatment Scope
The department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of critical conditions such as acute circulatory failure, acute respiratory failure, acute renal failure, acute liver failure, severe infections, severe poisoning, coagulation disorders, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), and severe electrolyte imbalances, as well as perioperative care and other complex and critical illnesses.
Technical advantages
Currently, the following treatments are routinely performed: Bispectral Index (BIS) monitoring, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), pulse-indicated continuous cardiac output monitoring (PiCCO), percutaneous tracheostomy (PDT), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy/ PEG/PEJ), artificial liver support, and monitoring of gas exchange and energy metabolism.
Research achievements
The department currently has one postdoctoral fellow, and 95.65% of its physicians hold master’s or doctoral degrees. It has undertaken more than ten national, provincial, and municipal-level research projects, including general projects funded by the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation. The department has authored or co-authored nine professional monographs, secured 12 invention patents and nearly 50 utility model patents, registered two software copyrights, and published over 30 papers in SCI-indexed journals as well as more than 50 professional translations. The department undertakes a wide range of training responsibilities, including serving as a National Standardized Residency Training Base (Critical Care Medicine), the Wuxi Critical Care Medicine Quality Control Center, the Wuxi Critical Care Nurse Training Base, and providing master’s-level education for Jiangnan University and Nantong University, as well as serving as a clinical practice teaching base for the Nantong University School of Medicine. In addition, the department has long been responsible for provincial and municipal continuing education programs, attracting a large number of medical professionals to participate in specialized continuing education training.
