Overview
The Department of Emergency Medicine of Wuxi No.2 People’s Hospital(Jiangnan University Medical Center) was successfully designated as a Wuxi Municipal Key Medical Specialty in 2010. In 2016, it became a National Standardized Training Base for Emergency Medicine and is currently a provincial-level key medical specialty development unit, the chair unit of the Emergency Medicine Branch of the Wuxi Medical Association, the chair unit of the Emergency Medicine Branch of the Wuxi Physicians Association, and a master’s degree program in emergency medicine at Jiangnan University. The department is equipped with first-class emergency medical equipment within the province, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) systems, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) equipment, invasive and non-invasive ventilators, point-of-care testing devices, defibrillators, bedside ultrasound machines, CT scanners, and MRI machines. It boasts a strong medical team and enjoys an excellent reputation in the community. The department handles over 320,000 emergency visits annually. The green channel for all types of emergency patients remains open 24 hours a day, with a resuscitation success rate exceeding 98%. We fully utilize ECMO technology, critical care monitoring, ventilator therapy, cardiopulmonary and cerebral resuscitation, blood purification, and nutritional support to provide life-sustaining care and emergency treatment for critically ill patients. The department is at the forefront of clinical treatment for conditions such as cardiac arrest, poisoning, shock, severe infections, ARDS, and multiple organ failure. It boasts a first-class team integrating medical practice, education, and research, comprising over 150 medical staff members, including 2 chief physicians, 9 associate chief physicians, and 24 attending physicians. The department also has 2 master’s degree supervisors and 2 associate professors. There are 2 PhD holders and 35 master’s degree holders, including 3 current PhD candidates.
Treatment scope
The Emergency Department at both the North and South Campuses features emergency triage, separate emergency examination rooms for internal and surgical medicine, an emergency resuscitation room, an emergency operating room, a debridement room, and an infusion room. The South Campus additionally houses specialized emergency examination rooms for urology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and dentistry, as well as an EICU (10 beds). The North Campus additionally features specialized emergency examination rooms for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Dermatology, as well as an observation room (10 beds) and an emergency ward (10 beds). Following the construction of new wards and the renovation and expansion of the emergency department, the layout has become more rational, enabling more scientific triage, rapid diagnosis and treatment, and appropriate admission of emergency patients. The department primarily treats various critical and life-threatening conditions and related diseases.
Technical advantages
As the frontline unit for the emergency treatment of critically ill patients, the Emergency Department centers its clinical approach on the principles of “urgency, speed, accuracy, and comprehensiveness.” It aims to secure the golden window of opportunity for patients through efficient processes and professional expertise, adhering to the principle that “time is life” and striving for a “second-by-second response” at every stage—from patient admission to initial assessment, examination, and treatment. The department implements triage to prioritize the treatment of high-risk patients while ensuring the rational allocation of medical resources. Seamless multidisciplinary collaboration is maintained: for complex critical conditions (such as severe trauma, cardiac arrest, and massive hemorrhage), the Emergency Department maintains dedicated centers—including the “Trauma Center,” “Chest Pain Center,” and “Stroke Center”—where multidisciplinary teams from surgery, cardiology, neurology, and interventional radiology conduct on-site consultations to achieve “resuscitation, diagnosis, and treatment simultaneously.” For critical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, anaphylactic shock, and status epilepticus, standardized resuscitation protocols have been established. Medical staff collaborate according to these protocols to ensure standardized procedures at every stage, thereby improving resuscitation success rates.
Research achievements
The Department of Emergency Medicine places a strong emphasis on clinical research. Over the past five years, it has received funding support from the Wuxi Municipal Health Commission for major projects, general research grants, and top-tier talent programs, as well as general research grants from Nanjing Medical University. In the past five years, the department has published a total of 9 SCI-indexed papers, 26 articles in the “Zhonghua” series of journals, and 15 papers in journals listed in the Peking University Core Journal List and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database. It has also secured 6 invention patents and 18 utility model patents.
