Overview
The Department of General Surgery at Wuxi No.2 People’s Hospital (Jiangnan University Medical Center) is a Key Medical Specialty of Jiangsu Province. It houses the Institute of General Surgery of Jiangnan University Medical Center and serves as a national drug clinical trial institution. The department is a member of the National Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Alliance for Gastrointestinal Cancer and a designated colorectal cancer screening base of the Colorectal Cancer Professional Committee of China Anti-Cancer Association. It is also affiliated with the Jiangsu Gastric Cancer Alliance and the Abdominal Tumor Minimally Invasive Surgery Alliance, and is a priority discipline for medical development in Wuxi. The department benefits from a top-tier expert team supported by the Wuxi Taihu Talent Program.
We provide comprehensive outpatient, emergency and inpatient medical services, and undertake medical assistance missions to Xinjiang, Qinghai, Lianyungang and other regions. The department consists of four subspecialty groups: Gastrointestinal Surgery, Thyroid & Breast Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Bariatric Surgery.
There are two inpatient wards distributed across the north and south campuses, with a total of 145 beds (Ward A8: 47 beds, Ward B8: 58 beds, Ward A14: 40 beds), including 6 emergency rescue beds. The department employs 39 physicians in total: 13 chief physicians, 16 associate chief physicians, 4 attending physicians, and 6 resident physicians. Among them, 2 are recipients of Jiangsu Provincial “333 High-level Talent Project,” and 1 is included in the Jiangsu Provincial “Six Major Talent Peaks Program,” including 1 doctoral supervisor and 3 master supervisors.
Treatment Scope
The department diagnoses and treats a broad range of general surgical diseases.
Gastrointestinal Surgery: Acute and chronic appendicitis, various abdominal wall hernias, intestinal obstruction, anorectal disorders, perforated peptic ulcer, Crohn’s disease, abdominal gastrointestinal stromal tumors, constipation, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer and other refractory gastrointestinal diseases.
Thyroid & Breast Surgery: Benign and malignant tumors of thyroid gland, breast and parathyroid gland.
Vascular Surgery: Lower extremity varicose veins, lower extremity arteriosclerotic occlusive disease, acute deep venous thrombosis, visceral artery aneurysm, thoracic aortic aneurysm, abdominal aortic aneurysm and other vascular diseases.
Bariatric Surgery: Morbid obesity and related metabolic disorders.

We routinely perform various general surgical operations, including laparoscopic appendectomy, open and laparoscopic abdominal wall hernia repair, intestinal obstruction surgery, laparoscopic exploration, open and laparoscopic radical gastrectomy, radical colectomy, laparoscopic colectomy, radical rectal cancer resection, laparoscopic rectal cancer resection, laparoscopic gastrointestinal stromal tumor resection, sleeve gastrectomy, surgery for constipation, partial thyroidectomy, total thyroidectomy, radical thyroidectomy, benign breast tumor resection, radical mastectomy, breast-conserving surgery, endoscopic partial thyroidectomy, endoscopic breast tumor resection, parathyroidectomy, parathyroid transplantation, minimally invasive surgery for lower extremity varicose veins, endovascular and open surgery for lower extremity arterial occlusive disease, surgical treatment for acute deep venous thrombosis, and minimally invasive surgery for thoracoabdominal and visceral artery aneurysms.
Minimally invasive treatment for gastrointestinal tumors is our core strength. We perform more than 700 laparoscopic gastrointestinal tumor surgeries annually, and take a leading position in ultra-low rectal cancer anal-preserving surgery in Wuxi. We also pioneered single-port laparoscopic bariatric surgery in the city. In addition, we carry out standardized comprehensive treatment for gastrointestinal tumors. In cooperation with Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Fudan University in Shanghai, we have established an MDT multidisciplinary treatment team and accumulated rich experience in conversion therapy for gastrointestinal malignancies.
