Overview
The Department of Infectious Diseases of Wuxi No.2 People's Hospital (Jiangnan University Medical Center) is one of the earliest established infectious disease departments in tertiary general hospitals in Wuxi. It serves as the vice-chairman unit of the Infectious Diseases Branch of Wuxi Medical Association, and maintains sound exchanges and cooperation with the Institute of Antibiotics of Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University.
The department has long been committed to the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, improving the rational empirical use of antibacterial drugs and scientific prevention and control of drug-resistant bacteria, making important contributions to elevating the diagnosis and treatment level of bacterial, fungal and other pathogen infections as well as the clinical application standard of antibiotics in Wuxi.
The ward is built in standardized configuration, equipped with advanced medical facilities including high-flow respiratory humidification therapy devices, ventilators and portable ultrasound systems. It runs specialist clinics covering infectious diseases, infection and antibiotic application, fever of unknown origin, multidisciplinary joint clinics for complex febrile diseases, as well as multidisciplinary clinics for complex pathogens and drug-resistant bacteria, focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases mainly caused by bacterial and fungal infections.
It is also responsible for the management of fever clinics, clinical diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases across the hospital, and guidance on rational use of antibiotics. Currently, the department has 1 chief physician, 1 associate chief physician, 1 attending physician, 3 resident physicians, 1 doctoral candidate and 5 master candidates.
Treatment Scope
It mainly diagnoses and treats systemic infectious diseases caused by various pathogens, including:
Respiratory system infections: diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19, influenza virus, various pneumonias, lung abscesses and pulmonary tuberculosis screening;
Digestive system infections: liver abscess, intra-abdominal abscess, intestinal infections such as typhoid fever and bacillary dysentery;
Urinary system infections: urinary tract infection, renal abscess and perirenal abscess;
Central nervous system infections: meningitis, meningoencephalitis and brain abscess;
Skin and soft tissue infections: maxillofacial space infection and skin abscess;
Other systemic infections: bloodstream infection, infective endocarditis and endophthalmitis;
Vector-borne infectious diseases: Japanese encephalitis, dengue fever, malaria transmitted by insect bites in different regions;Patients with fever of unknown origin.

Physicians in this department possess comprehensive professional knowledge covering infectious diseases, clinical microbiology and clinical pharmacology. They are well versed in common pathogens of various infections and their drug resistance profiles, as well as the properties of all kinds of antibacterial agents.
With rich practical experience accumulated through massive clinical work, the department effectively raises the cure rate of infectious diseases, promotes rational application of antibiotics and reduces adverse drug reactions.
Research achievements
The department has undertaken 4 research projects sponsored by Wuxi Municipal Government and Nanjing Medical University, and published more than 20 high-quality papers in domestic and foreign academic journals. It has won the Second Prize of Jiangsu Provincial Award for Introduction of New Medical Technologies and the Third Prize of Wuxi Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award. In teaching work, its staff have been awarded the title of Outstanding Clinical Teacher by Nanjing Medical University.
