Oncology
Overview
The Department of Oncology is a Jiangsu Provincial Key Clinical Specialty and a standardized cancer pain management ward of Jiangsu Province. It is also a master training base for radiation oncology of Jiangnan University and the vice-chairman unit of Oncology and Radiation Therapy Branch of Wuxi Medical Association.
The department consists of inpatient wards, outpatient clinics and linear accelerator rooms. Wards are set up at both north and south campuses with a total of 86 beds. After 30 years of development, it has grown into an integrated oncology treatment center offering radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and other comprehensive treatment modalities.
It has a total of 60 medical staff, including 9 chief physicians, 4 associate chief physicians and 3 attending physicians. Among them are 2 master supervisors, 4 doctors and 10 masters (3 are currently pursuing doctoral degrees).
Treatment Scope
It provides comprehensive treatment for patients with malignant tumors including head and neck tumors, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, colorectal cancer, lymphoma, gastric cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, renal cell carcinoma, bladder cancer and prostate cancer. Available treatments include medical therapy such as neoadjuvant chemotherapy, postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, molecular targeted therapy and immunotherapy, tumor radiotherapy, palliative care for tumors at all stages, standardized cancer pain management and integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine therapy. Guided by evidence-based medicine, the department implements standardized oncological treatment. Through combined and individualized therapy, it helps most patients with advanced tumors prolong survival, relieve suffering and improve quality of life.
Technical advantages
The department is fully equipped with advanced radiotherapy facilities, including linear accelerator, CT simulator, radiotherapy simulator and CMS treatment planning system. It can deliver conventional radiotherapy, conformal radiotherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy for malignant tumors. It has accumulated rich experience in concurrent chemoradiotherapy for lung cancer, glioma, esophageal cancer and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which features high efficacy and mild adverse reactions. It boasts distinctive advantages in multidisciplinary comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and lymphoma. Integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine therapy is adopted to effectively improve patients’ quality of life.
Research achievements
Over the past five years, the department has published more than 50 academic papers, including 12 SCI-indexed papers, 10 papers in core journals of Chinese Medical Association series and 10 other core journal papers. It was granted two National Natural Science Foundation Youth Projects in 2015 and 2022 respectively. It has won three Second Prizes of New Technology Introduction Award issued by Jiangsu Provincial Health Department, undertaken one research project each sponsored by Jiangsu Provincial Health Commission and Jiangsu Hospital Association, and obtained approval for five research projects from Wuxi Municipal Health Commission.
