Overview
The Department of Ophthalmology at Wuxi No.2 People’s Hospital（Jiangnan University Medical Center）is among the earliest ophthalmic specialty services established in Wuxi. It has evolved into a comprehensive medical center integrating clinical care, education, and research. It comprises a robust, multidisciplinary team delivering high-level ophthalmic care and education, with active participation in national and regional professional development.

Facilities and Capacity
The department houses internationally advanced equipment, including full-excavation femtosecond laser systems, Constellation vitrectomy and phacoemulsification integrated platforms, Signature phacoemulsification devices, Zeiss and Leica non-contact fundus visualization microscopes, Roland Vision electrophysiology, multi-wavelength fundus laser systems, swept-source OCT, ultra-wide-field scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO), Sirius corneal topography, corneal confocal microscopy, OA-2000 ocular biometry, OPD-Scan III refractive analysis, and LipiView dry eye analysis.
Annual outpatient and emergency visits exceed 250,000.

Treatment Scope
The Ophthalmology Department provides comprehensive services across both the South and North Campus, including general clinics, expert clinics, refraction services, ophthalmic functional testing rooms, and treatment rooms. The South Campus also houses ophthalmic emergency services, inpatient wards (60 beds), daytime hospital (20 beds), refractive surgery center, outpatient and inpatient operating rooms, an ophthalmic bank, and an ophthalmic microbiology laboratory. The department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of common and complex ophthalmic diseases, including:

Technical Advantages
The department has long been at the forefront of ophthalmology in the region, establishing eight subspecialties early: retinal disease, cataract, glaucoma, cornea and ocular surface disease, oculoplastics and orbit, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, refractive surgery, and ocular diagnostics. An independent ophthalmic operating room and the Wuxi Eye Bank are maintained. In 2023, a Traditional Chinese Medicine ophthalmology sub-specialty was added.
The retinal subspecialty further subdivides into retina surgery, retina medicine, uveitis, neuro-ophthalmology, and pediatric retinal diseases. Regularly perform vitreoretinal (including complex) surgeries and intravitreal injections, with annual volumes of approximately 7,000 procedures.
Cataract surgeries: over 4,000 cases annually.
Glaucoma surgeries: over 400 cases annually.
Oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgeries: over 1,600 cases annually.
Refractive and laser vision surgeries: nearly 3,000 cases annually.
Strabismus procedures: over 200 cases annually.
Corneal transplantation: around 30 cases annually.
Eye Diagnostics and Special Tests: substantial daily workload in the ophthalmic diagnostics department.

Over the past decade, the department has aggressively advanced clinical practice alongside research:
Publications: more than 60 SCI-indexed papers; over 170 papers in Chinese core journals, high-impact journals, and indexing databases.
Intellectual property: 3 patents granted.
Scholarly contributions: authored a monograph in ophthalmology.
Rankings and recognitions: since 2014, the department has consistently ranked among the top 100 ophthalmology departments in China Medical Schools/China Hospital Science and Technology Quantification (STEM) rankings, and is the only ophthalmology department in Wuxi to achieve this elite status. In 2022, the STEM ranking placed the department at 38th nationally, 3rd in the province, and 1st in the city. Over a five-year period, the department ranked 5th in science and technology output nationwide in its category and 1st in the city.
