Overview
The Department of Orthopedic Surgery of Wuxi No.2 People's Hospital (Jiangnan University Medical Center) is a Key Clinical Specialty of Jiangsu Province, an Academician Qiu Guixing Workstation, a Key Clinical Specialty of Wuxi City, a national standardized training base for orthopedic resident physicians, a training base for specialized orthopedic nurses in Wuxi, and a Wuxi Youth Civilization Unit awarded by the Communist Youth League.
It is equipped with advanced medical facilities including modern arthroscopy systems, spinal endoscopes and C-arm X-ray machines. The department has 27 physicians in total, including 13 chief physicians, 4 associate chief physicians, 6 doctors, 20 masters and 1 master’s supervisor.
Three subspecialties are established: Joint Surgery, Spinal Surgery and Sports Medicine. With two campuses (North and South), it has 106 inpatient beds in total, performing over 4,000 surgeries and receiving more than 100,000 outpatient visits annually.
Treatment Scope
The department mainly treats neck and shoulder pain, lumbocrural pain, joint pain, joint movement disorders, limb numbness, paresthesia and limb weakness caused by various causes.
Common orthopedic diseases include various types of cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spinal stenosis, lumbar spondylolisthesis, spinal instability, spinal ligament ossification; knee osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, hip dislocation, osteonecrosis of the femoral head, rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic arthritis; meniscus injury, cruciate ligament rupture, rotator cuff injury, frozen shoulder, subacromial impingement syndrome, joint instability, joint dislocation, tenosynovitis and lumbar muscle strain.
It also manages intractable orthopedic disorders such as primary and metastatic spinal tumors, limb bone and joint tumors, and soft tissue tumors of extremities.
Technical advantages
In Spinal Surgery, anterior and posterior cervical spine surgeries, fusion and internal fixation surgeries for lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spondylolisthesis, spinal tumors and spinal instability are routinely performed. Minimally invasive percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy and unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) for lumbar disorders and endoscopic interbody fusion are widely applied.
In Joint Surgery, primary and revision hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty, unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, as well as knee-preserving surgeries including femoral and tibial osteotomy are regularly carried out.
In Sports Medicine, minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures are widely conducted, such as arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, treatment of shoulder instability, shoulder joint debridement, meniscus plasty and repair, and arthroscopic cruciate ligament reconstruction. Surgical treatments for pelvic, acetabular and limb fractures are also routinely performed.
Research achievements
The department won the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award in 2020, Jiangsu Provincial New Technology Introduction Award in 2021, Jiangsu Provincial Medical Science and Technology Progress Award in 2022, and the First Prize of Jiangsu Provincial Medical New Technology Introduction Award in 2023.
It has undertaken more than 10 provincial and municipal research projects, published over 50 SCI papers and more than 40 Chinese core medical papers, compiled 4 monographs, and obtained over 50 national utility model patents.
