Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery
Overview
The Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of Wuxi No.2 People's Hospital (Jiangnan University Medical Center), founded in 1956, is one of the earliest established specialized departments in Jiangsu Province.
It is accredited as a Key Clinical Specialty of Jiangsu Province, a Key Medical Discipline (Innovative Team) of Wuxi City, a national standardized training base for resident physicians in otorhinolaryngology, a training base for master students in otorhinolaryngology of Jiangnan University, Nantong University and other universities, and the affiliated institution of Wuxi Quality Control Center for Otorhinolaryngology.
The department consists of outpatient clinic, emergency department, inpatient ward, audiology room and laryngoscopy room. It receives over 137,000 outpatient and emergency visits, admits more than 2,400 inpatients and performs 2,200 surgeries annually. It is equipped with advanced medical devices including Leica surgical microscopes, STORZ nasal endoscope systems and Olympus electronic laryngoscopes.
There are 22 physicians in total, among whom 18 are chief physicians and associate chief physicians, including 1 professor, 3 associate professors and 5 doctors. Over 80% of the staff hold master’s or higher degrees, with 4 master’s supervisors.

Ear & Skull Base Surgery
Acute and chronic otitis media, tympanic membrane perforation, various types of hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, congenital and acquired malformations of external and middle ear, benign and malignant tumors of ear and lateral skull base, cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea, peripheral facial paralysis, etc.
Nasal & Skull Base Surgery
Allergic rhinitis, epistaxis, nasal trauma and deformity, nasal septum deviation, olfactory dysfunction, acute and chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyps, benign and malignant tumors of nasal cavity, paranasal sinus and nasopharynx, naso-ocular disorders, nasofacial disorders, naso-skull base diseases, etc.
Pharyngolaryngeal & Head-Neck Surgery
Tonsillar and adenoid hypertrophy, chronic tonsillitis, snoring in children and adults, sore throat, neck pain, hoarseness, pharyngeal paraesthesia, esophageal foreign bodies in adults, benign and malignant tumors of neck, benign and malignant laryngopharyngeal tumors, cervical trauma, etc.

Ear & Skull Base Surgery
Auditory function assessment, vestibular function evaluation, otoscopic examination; tympanoplasty, modified radical mastoidectomy, ossicular chain reconstruction, cochlear implantation, stapes implantation, cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea repair, facial nerve transplantation and decompression, partial/subtotal temporal bone resection combined with partial parotidectomy, surgical treatment of otogenic vertigo, etc.
Nasal & Skull Base Surgery
Allergen detection, nasal endoscopy; functional endoscopic sinus surgery, complex endoscopic nasal and sinus surgery, nasal septoplasty, nasal septal perforation repair, resection of nasal, sinus and skull base tumors, dacryocystorhinostomy for chronic dacryocystitis, endoscopic correction of traumatic nasal deformity, partial maxillectomy, resection of benign nasopharyngeal tumors, etc.
Pharyngolaryngeal & Head-Neck Surgery
Laryngopharyngeal endoscopy; tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, modified uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, minimally invasive treatment of laryngopharyngeal tumors, partial laryngectomy, total laryngectomy, cervical lymph node dissection, resection of cervical fistula and sinus tract, excision of benign and malignant cervical tumors, functional-preserving resection of neurogenic tumors, esophageal foreign body removal, etc.
Research achievements
The department has undertaken more than 10 research projects including General Programs of National Natural Science Foundation, Key R&D Programs of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and research projects sponsored by Wuxi Science and Technology Bureau and Health Commission.
It has won 13 Provincial Medical New Technology Introduction Awards of Jiangsu and 4 Wuxi Science and Technology Progress Awards. Every year, it enrolls and graduates 3 to 4 master postgraduates respectively.
