Overview

The Department of Pathology of Wuxi No.2 People’s Hospital(Jiangnan University Medical Center) is currently designated as a Key Clinical Specialty at both the provincial and municipal levels in Jiangsu Province; it serves as a master’s degree training program for clinical pathology at Jiangnan University; functions as a national standardized residency training base for pathology; and holds the position of standing council member in the Jiangsu Provincial Pathology Specialty Alliance. The department’s medical, technical, and support staff are appropriately scaled to the hospital’s bed capacity. The team possesses comprehensive professional knowledge and a well-balanced age distribution. Among them are 12 diagnostic pathologists, including 3 chief physicians and 2 associate chief physicians; and 10 pathology technicians, including 1 chief technician, 1 associate chief technician, and 3 senior technicians. The department has 2 PhD holders, 1 PhD candidate, 10 master’s degree holders, and 2 master’s degree supervisors. Currently, there are 3 master’s degree candidates enrolled in the department’s teaching program, along with numerous trainees from the national standardized residency training program and visiting physicians and technicians from other institutions. In addition to handling over 50,000 external pathology cases annually, the department also provides consultation services for complex pathological cases from medical consortiums and surrounding institutions.                              

The department is equipped with advanced medical devices and a comprehensive technical platform. The clinical pathology testing services it provides cover six major areas: routine HE paraffin sections, intraoperative frozen sections, cytopathology, special stains, immunopathology, and molecular pathology. The testing utilizes nearly 300 antibodies and over 40 special staining reagents, covering the diagnosis, differential diagnosis, classification, molecular typing, and prognosis assessment of malignant tumors across various specialties—such as molecular typing of breast cancer, diagnosis and classification of lymphoma, classification of pituitary adenomas, and microsatellite instability and mismatch repair protein testing for colorectal cancer; characteristic staining for non-neoplastic diseases of the liver, kidneys, lungs, and other organs; early-stage sensitive detection of amyloidosis and precursor proteomic analysis; and molecular pathology testing for targeted therapy of cancers such as breast cancer, lung cancer, and gastrointestinal cancers.                                                          

Research achievements                              

In recent years, the Department of Pathology has published more than 70 papers in SCI-indexed journals, China-level journals, and core statistical source journals, including nearly 30 SCI papers and more than 20 China-level papers. The department has been granted 10 invention patents (including 1 U.S. patent and 4 international patents) and has received 3 Jiangsu Provincial Awards for the Introduction of New Medical Technologies. The department boasts one recipient of the Wuxi City “Double Hundred” Top Talent title and two “Wild Goose Formation” talents at the hospital level. Faculty members have led three general projects, one youth project, and three appropriate technology promotion projects funded by the Wuxi Municipal Health Commission, as well as one teaching project at Jiangnan University and five soft science projects funded by the Municipal Association for Science and Technology. As a designated training base for the Wuxi City Standardized Residency Program in Pathology, the department has trained 20 high-caliber pathology residents passionate about diagnostic pathology over the past five years.
