Pediatrics


Overview

The Department of Pediatrics is a comprehensive department integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, preventive health care and chronic disease management, and serves as a master training base for pediatrics at Jiangnan University.

 

It consists of a general pediatric ward, a neonatal ward, pediatric outpatient and emergency department, as well as specialist clinics at both north and south campuses, with 30 inpatient beds in total. Equipped with advanced special medical devices for newborns and children including pediatric ventilators (including non-invasive respiratory support), multi-function monitors, pediatric bronchoscopes, pulmonary function testers and fractional exhaled nitric oxide detectors.

 

The department has more than 30 professional medical staff, including 5 chief physicians, 5 associate chief physicians and 3 attending physicians, among whom there are 2 doctors, 6 masters and 1 master supervisor.

 

It is certified as a Standardized Children’s Asthma Clinic by the Pediatric Allergy Branch of Chinese Medical Association, and acts as the deputy leading unit of the Respiratory Cooperation Group and Digestive Cooperation Group under Wuxi Pediatric Medical Alliance, as well as a member of Wuxi Critical Neonatal Treatment Union and Wuxi Neonatal Nursing Alliance.

 

Adhering to the service tenet of "All for children's health," the department is committed to providing all-round and high-quality medical services for children in local and surrounding areas.

 

Treatment Scope

The department provides full-range diagnosis and treatment for various illnesses in children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 years old, covering: - Neonatal diseases: management of premature and low-birth-weight infants, asphyxia resuscitation, neonatal respiratory distress, jaundice, infection, neonatal encephalopathy, etc. - Respiratory diseases: pneumonia, asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis and related disorders. - Allergic diseases: allergic rhinitis, allergic dermatitis, eczema and other allergic conditions. - Digestive diseases: diarrhea, gastritis, peptic ulcer, food allergy, gastrointestinal dysfunction, etc. - Infectious diseases: hand-foot-mouth disease, scarlet fever, infectious mononucleosis, drug-resistant mycoplasma infection, etc. - Neurological diseases: convulsion, epilepsy, intracranial infection, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, tic disorders, etc. - Cardiovascular diseases: myocarditis, arrhythmia, follow-up management of congenital heart disease, etc. - Urinary system diseases: nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, urinary tract infection, enuresis, etc. - Hematological diseases: anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukemia and other blood system disorders. - Endocrine diseases: short stature, precocious puberty, diabetes, thyroid diseases, etc. - Rheumatic immune diseases: Kawasaki disease, Henoch-Schönlein purpura, juvenile arthritis, etc. - Pediatric critical illnesses: shock, respiratory failure, heart failure, poisoning and other severe emergencies. - Child health care: growth and development monitoring, nutritional assessment, neuropsychological evaluation and follow-up care for high-risk infants.

Pediatric Respiratory and Allergy Specialty

As one of the first standardized pediatric asthma clinics certified by the Chinese Medical Association, it specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric respiratory and allergic diseases. It routinely carries out intelligent atomization therapy, allergen detection including skin prick tests, fractional exhaled nitric oxide measurement and pediatric bronchoscopy.

 

It boasts rich experience in standardized management, sublingual and subcutaneous specific immunotherapy as well as targeted biologic therapy for pediatric asthma, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis and atopic dermatitis. A rapid respiratory pathogen detection platform covering influenza virus, COVID-19, mycoplasma pneumoniae and other pathogens has been established.

 

Pediatric Growth and Development Specialty

It focuses on standardized diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of children's growth disorders, with outstanding expertise in the diagnosis, differential diagnosis and individualized treatment of precocious puberty and short stature.

 

In cooperation with well-known institutions including Children's Hospital of Fudan University and The Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, it provides authoritative growth assessment, intervention and follow-up services and regularly conducts popular science education on children's growth and development.

 

Pediatric Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Specialty

It systematically diagnoses and treats neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders such as epilepsy, central nervous system infection, tic disorder, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and learning difficulties.

 

Equipped with complete neuroelectrophysiological examinations including routine, video and ambulatory electroencephalography as well as CT and MRI imaging examinations, it delivers comprehensive services including neurodevelopmental assessment, intelligence testing and behavioral intervention.

 

Research achievements

Over the past five years, the department has undertaken 2 municipal and department-level research projects, published more than 50 academic papers including over 10 SCI papers, obtained 2 patents, and compiled 2 professional monographs as chief editor or participating editor.

 

As the pediatric postgraduate training base of Jiangnan University School of Medicine, it undertakes teaching tasks for many medical colleges and has cultivated dozens of postgraduates, standardized training physicians and interns. The teaching and research section has been repeatedly rated as Excellent Teaching and Research Section, and many teachers have been awarded titles such as Outstanding Teacher and Excellent Clinical Preceptor.
