Overview

The Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is a key clinical specialty at the municipal level in Wuxi and a key clinical specialty at the provincial level in Jiangsu. It is also a member of the Jiangsu Respiratory Intervention Alliance. The department has a staff of over 100, including 25 specialist physicians, 7 with senior professional titles, and 10 with intermediate professional titles; there are 3 PhDs and 4 PhD candidates, with 85% of the staff holding master’s degrees or higher. The department comprises inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, specialist clinics, and specialized clinics. The inpatient wards span four areas across the North and South campuses, with a total of 108 beds available. The department has established subspecialties in chronic respiratory diseases (COPD, asthma), lung cancer, pulmonary infections, interstitial lung diseases, and critical care medicine. In addition to general and specialist outpatient services, the department offers specialized clinics for asthma and COPD, lung cancer and pulmonary nodules, interstitial lung diseases, and pneumonia, as well as a multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinic for lung cancer and pulmonary nodules; The department features a state-of-the-art Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU), a Respiratory Endoscopy and Interventional Therapy Center, and a pulmonary function laboratory. It is equipped with advanced invasive and non-invasive ventilators, integrated central monitoring systems, hemodynamic monitoring systems, conventional bronchoscopes, ultrasound bronchoscopes, medical thoracoscopes, rigid bronchoscopes, laser and cryotherapy devices, argon plasma coagulators, balloon dilators, pulmonary vibration devices for mucus clearance, and spirometers.

 

Treatment Scope

Whole-course management of lung cancer & respiratory interventional diagnosis and treatment, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchial asthma, pneumonia and pulmonary infectious diseases, interstitial lung diseases (ILD), bronchiectasis, pulmonary embolism/pulmonary hypertension, acute and chronic respiratory failure/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pleural effusion/pneumothorax, endobronchial foreign body, sleep-disordered breathing diseases (snoring disorder)

 

Technical advantages

Ultrasound/CT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy, endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), radioactive seed implantation for lung cancer, bronchoscopic balloon dilation and airway stent implantation, diagnosis and treatment via medical thoracoscopy, individualized therapy for lung cancer, bronchoscopic ablation therapy for advanced pulmonary tumors, interventional therapy for tracheoesophageal fistula, combination of rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) in interventional pulmonology and next-generation sequencing (NGS) to guide the diagnosis and treatment of intractable pulmonary infectious diseases, diagnosis and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing disorders, non-invasive evaluation technology of airway inflammation, invasive/non-invasive ventilator therapy for respiratory failure, non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring and other advantageous specialized medical technologies.

 

Research achievements

The department has undertaken more than 10 provincial and municipal scientific research projects in the past five years and published over 30 high-quality papers, including SCI papers. It has won one First Prize and two Second Prizes of the New Technology Introduction Award issued by Jiangsu Provincial Health Department, as well as one Third Prize of Wuxi Science and Technology Progress Award. Many staff members have been awarded provincial, ministerial and municipal honors, such as Advanced Individual in COVID-19 Prevention and Control of the National Health System, Provincial Advanced Individual in Fighting against COVID-19, and Provincial & Municipal Top 100 Medical Ethics Role Models.
