Ultrasound

Overview

The Department of Ultrasound Medicine of Wuxi No.2 People’s Hospital(Jiangnan University Medical Center) is a regional ultrasound medical center that integrates medical care, teaching, and research, with two main campuses: the South Campus and the North Campus. Building on the comprehensive strengths of this century-old institution, the department began in the 1980s and, after decades of development, has become a core member of Wuxi’s ultrasound quality control network.

In recent years, by integrating resources across the South and North campuses, the department has driven the transformation of ultrasound technology from traditional diagnosis to precision interventional therapy.

Talent Pool and Core Technologies: The department currently has 24 physicians (including 3 chief physicians and 6 associate chief physicians) and 3 nursing staff members. Among them, there is 1 master’s supervisor, 6 master’s degree holders, and 4 students currently pursuing master’s degrees. The department offers subspecialties including “Abdominal Ultrasound,” “Interventional Ultrasound,” “Obstetrics and Gynecology Ultrasound,” “Vascular Ultrasound,” “Superficial and Small Organ Ultrasound,” and “Musculoskeletal Ultrasound.”

Technical advantages

Interventional Ultrasound: We perform a range of minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including biopsies of various tumors, the thyroid, and the breast; lymph node biopsies; abscess and gallbladder puncture and drainage; sclerotherapy for cysts; and microwave ablation of liver tumors.

Abdominal Ultrasound: Utilizing dynamic real-time imaging and multimodal techniques (contrast-enhanced/elasticity), we provide comprehensive support across the entire spectrum of care, from screening to precise diagnosis and treatment.

Prenatal Diagnosis: Our accuracy rates for fetal nuchal translucency (NT) screening and comprehensive fetal anomaly screening rank among the highest in the region. Three of our physicians hold provincial-level certifications in prenatal diagnosis.

Equipment platforms and scientific innovation

Equipped with more than 20 state-of-the-art devices, including the GE Voluson E10 and GE LOGIQ E20, the facility supports cutting-edge technologies such as elastic imaging and contrast-enhanced ultrasound.

Service advantages and social responsibility

Efficient Diagnosis and Treatment: We have implemented a “same-day testing” policy, ensuring that routine outpatient tests are completed on the same day and all reports are issued within 10 minutes.

Patient-Centered Care: We have designated waiting areas for pregnant women and the elderly, which have received high praise from patients.

Looking ahead, the department will continue to refine its dual-track model of “precision ultrasound + minimally invasive treatment.” Guided by technological innovation and patient needs, we aim to establish a leading center for ultrasound medicine in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Research achievements

In terms of research, the department has published dozens of professional papers over the past five years, including two papers in top-tier Chinese journals and nine SCI-indexed papers. One team member has been recognized as a Key Medical Talent in Wuxi’s “Science, Education, and Health” initiative. The team has completed two municipal-level research projects and received one second-class award for the introduction of new medical technologies in Jiangsu Province, as well as two second-class awards for the introduction of new medical technologies in Wuxi.

In the field of education, the department serves as a teaching base for the ultrasound medicine specialty and is responsible for standardized residency training. Over the past decade, it has admitted nearly 100 residents in ultrasound medicine.

The department’s team has optimized services through flexible work models such as “Lunch Break Consultations” and “Extended Evening Hours,” striving to improve diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes while reducing patient wait times. Through research collaboration, technology introduction, and teaching practice, the department continues to elevate the standard of regional ultrasound medicine, contributing to the cultivation of high-level talent and the promotion of clinical techniques.
