Overview
The Department of Urology, Wuxi No.2 People’s Hospital (Jiangnan University Medical Center) is the earliest established urological specialty in Wuxi. It is the only Class A Innovative Team in Wuxi approved by Jiangsu Province, a Key Clinical Specialty of Jiangsu Province, Wuxi Clinical Medical Center, Wuxi Minimally Invasive Urology Center, and a university-level key specialty of Nanjing Medical University.
It also houses the Urology Research Institute of Central Hospital Affiliated to Jiangnan University, serves as a doctoral and master’s training base of Jiangnan University School of Medicine, acts as the chairman unit of Wuxi Urology Specialty Alliance, and has been awarded honors including Jiangsu May 4th Youth Honor Group, Wuxi Worker Pioneer, Integrated Prostate Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Center, member unit of China Andrological Equipment Clinical Research Alliance, and Southern Jiangsu Training Center of China Expert Alliance for Female Lower Urinary Tract Diseases and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction.
The department runs nearly 4 inpatient wards across the north and south campuses with more than 170 beds. It is equipped with an extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy room, urodynamic examination room, andrology treatment room and translational medicine laboratory for urology. It records over 70,000 outpatient visits, admits more than 7,500 inpatients and performs nearly 5,000 operations annually, among which minimally invasive laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeries account for over 85%.
Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including the latest Da Vinci Surgical System, German KARL STORZ ultra-high-definition 3D laparoscopic system, Boston Scientific Rezum water vapor thermal ablation system for prostate, Lumenis Moses holmium laser surgical system, new-type KARL STORZ flexible ureteroscope, Olympus flexible ureteroscope and flexible cystoscope, WOLF rigid ureteroscope and cystoscope, intelligent pressure-controlled intracorporeal lithotripsy suction system, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter and urodynamic detector.
The department has over 60 medical staff, including 9 chief physicians, 8 associate chief physicians and 18 attending and resident physicians. There are 1 doctoral supervisor, 5 master’s supervisors, 2 postdoctoral researchers and 11 doctors, with over 95% of the staff holding doctoral or master’s degrees.
Treatment Scope
1.Infectious Diseases: Renal infections such as pyelonephritis and renal abscess; ureteral infections including ureteritis; bladder infections such as bladder abscess, cystitis and hemorrhagic cystitis; as well as urethritis and prostatitis.
2.Urolithiasis: Calculi located in all parts of the urinary system including kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra and prostate.
3.Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: Commonly known as enlarged prostate, it mainly involves glandular and stromal hyperplasia. It is prevalent among elderly males, characterized by frequent micturition, nocturia and dysuria. Severe cases may develop urinary retention, urinary incontinence and even renal function impairment.
4.Andrological Diseases: Infertility, diseases of penis, external genitalia and testis.
5.Urinary System Tumors: Malignant tumors occurring in kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra, penis and other urinary organs.
Technical Advantages
The department has set up six subspecialty groups: laparoscopic minimally invasive urology, prostate diseases, urolithiasis, urological oncology, andrology and pelvic floor urinary control. It has achieved outstanding achievements in minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of urological tumors, and management of complex urological disorders.
It routinely performs robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, laparoscopic radical cystectomy with orthotopic ileal neobladder reconstruction, laparoscopic radical nephrectomy and nephron-sparing minimally invasive surgery, reaching domestically leading and internationally advanced technical levels.
Endoscopic minimally invasive therapies are widely applied for urolithiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and superficial intracavitary urinary tumors. Satisfactory clinical outcomes have been achieved in the treatment of high-risk and elderly patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia via water vapor thermal ablation, red laser and green laser minimally invasive surgery.
As a featured specialty, the andrology division excels in the diagnosis and treatment of seminal vesicle surgery, penoscrotal surgery, male sexual dysfunction, male tumors, genitourinary tract infections and male infertility. Since the establishment of the specialized andrology clinic, it has provided standardized and professional treatment schemes for patients with intractable male diseases and won widespread recognition.
Research achievements
The department has undertaken 2 General Programs and 1 Youth Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 sub-project of National Key R&D Program, 3 projects supported by Jiangsu Provincial Natural Science Foundation and Key R&D Programs of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Science and Technology, as well as multiple municipal key research projects.
More than 100 papers have been published in top-tier international journals including Molecular Cancer, European Urology, Nature Communications and Cell Reports, with the highest impact factor reaching 41.4 and total citations exceeding 2,000.
It has been awarded 1 First Prize of Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Second Prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, 1 Second Prize and 3 Third Prizes of Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. The team has obtained 9 national invention patents and 4 international invention patents.
